SYNC 3 retrofit: the decision and the parts
Same 8-inch screen opening, same dash, new module behind it. Portable screens are ruled out at your direction. Every price below was pulled live from the vendor's own product page today.
The call
Two things changed since yesterday's writeup.
1. Your text problem is diagnosed. You opened the iPhone Bluetooth settings for SYNC and the Show Notifications toggle was off. That is the documented root cause. Turn it on, restart the car Ford's way, and test with your phone locked before you spend a dollar on hardware. Costs nothing and may be the whole fix.
2. FourSyncTech is back in stock. Yesterday every variant read sold out. Today all eight are available, including $690 with wireless CarPlay built in, against 4D Tech's $999.99 wired. That is a real $310 gap, and $690 buys wireless that 4D Tech charges extra for.
The recommendation: 4D Tech at $999.99 is still the safe pick because its page names the Fusion Hybrid explicitly and hybrid programming is the one thing that can go wrong on your car. FourSyncTech is the value pick if they confirm two things in writing first (below). Email them, wait a day, then decide.
Step 1: the free fix, confirmed
The toggle was off. That is the answer.
- iPhone
Settings > Bluetooth, tap (i) next to SYNC, turn Show Notifications ON. If more than one SYNC entry is listed, do every one. - Restart the car Ford's way: ignition off, open driver door, wait for the cluster to go dark, close door, start.
- Have someone text you with your phone locked. Ford's own doc: the iPhone only notifies SYNC when the Messages app is not on screen.
- Press the voice button and say "Listen to text message."
Backup that bypasses the whole broken layer: hold the steering wheel voice button 2 to 3 seconds until the Siri tone, then say "read my messages." That is Siri Eyes Free, shipped to MyFord Touch in Ford's v3.8 update in October 2015. It rides the hands-free calling channel rather than the message profile, so it works even when the notification path does not.
Step 2: the recall, before any retrofit
Run your VIN first
NHTSA 25V695000 (Ford 25SA9), opened 13 October 2025, covers roughly 1.45 million vehicles including the 2016 Fusion, for the rearview camera. Check at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Sequence matters: a dealer that finds a non-factory module reporting SYNC 2 build data has both a reason to refuse the campaign and a way for the flash to fail. Free to do in the right order, expensive in the wrong one.
Step 3: who to buy from
Both kits are genuine Ford APIM modules programmed to your VIN. The difference is price, wireless, and how explicitly they support a hybrid.

Ask FourSyncTech these two questions before sending $590
- Hybrid as-built: "Will the APIM be programmed with hybrid as-built data so the EV Info power-flow page still works on a 2016 Fusion Hybrid?" Their page never says Hybrid; 4D Tech's does. This is the single question that decides between them.
- CarPlay-capable media hub: "Does the kit ship a CarPlay-capable USB media hub?" The older pre-CarPlay hub has identical connectors, installs fine, then throws "USB hubs are not supported, please remove." Sources disagree on the correct part number, so get it in writing rather than matching it yourself.
If they answer both cleanly, you save $310 and get wireless. If they dodge either, buy 4D Tech and stop thinking about it.

Portable CarPlay screens
Removed at your direction, hard no. For the record, the reasons hold up: a tablet on the glass, audio has to leave over Bluetooth or AUX which likely hijacks the pairing SYNC uses for texts, and MotorTrend found the units are largely identical rebadged hardware.
Aftermarket double-DIN head unit
The standard kit for this car is the Metra 99-5841B, and Metra's own page says verbatim "Hybrid Vehicles are Not Supported" and that SYNC is "only retained in the 4.2-inch display screen models." Both disqualifiers land on you, and interface gear alone runs $450 to $860 before the radio.
